Byron Machin
- Public Speaker and Writer -

About my talks: My talks last between 60 and 90 minutes - they are accompanied by high quality PowerPoint presentations, created using my own photographs and research.. I provide all necessary equipment, laptop, projector and screen. I am available to travel up to 30 miles from Leek in the Staffordshire Moorlands including the major settlements of Bakewell, Ashborune, Derby, Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent, Congleton and Macclesfield.

About me: I was born in the Staffordshire Moorlands and since a young boy have had a passion for all aspects of its history. I studied Physical Geography at university and I am now a high school teacher in Cheshire. In addition to prehistoric archaeology my interests include landscape detection, entomology, mining history and folklore. I am also a keen caver and climber, often to be found exploring some remote corner of the Peak District. I am also a keen writer, having published almost a dozen books on prehistoric archaeology and industrial history. Along with writingI run a local history group in North Staffordshire, and lead numerous public natural history walks.

My Talks

The Stone Circles of the Peak District

An in-depth look at the history of Neolithic and Bronze Age man in the Peak District, through the remains of his evocative stone monuments, which remain scattered across the high moor

The Mines of the Peak District - A Story in Stone

The mines of the Peak District were once some of the richest and deepest in the world. This talk explores their history, development, geology and contains some outstanding underground photography.

The Mist Covered Mountains of Home

A photographic journey through the magnificent Peak District. Including insights into both its landscape, culture, natural history and archaeology.

The Wild Orchids of the Peak District

A look at the numerous rare and beautiful orchids found in the peak district; not only looking at their natural history but also their folklore, distribution and future.
