Alan Mannering - Public Speaker

This is a stand-alone talk, with no props other than a CD player which I bring with me. I will travel anywhere within the UK. As I do not drive a lift is always appreciated if I am speaking in the Birmingham area. My CD player is tested and PAT compliant.

Any Old Iron

Arthur Callahan an American, wearing trainers, light cotton trousers and a T-shirt walked through the metal detector at Memphis airport and set the alarms going. This didn't happen just once, it became a regular occurrence and on at least one occasion the resultant panic by the security officials caused him to miss his plane. Eventually, it was discovered that poor Arthur's problem wasn't bungled attempts to smuggle arms but an undiagnosed case of 'iron overload' or to put it more grandly, haemochromatosis, a genetic condition only just becoming recognised by the medical profession. This talk is a light-hearted look at the effects of having too much iron in my body
If you would like to know more about this little known illness, please visit my website www.mysilentillness.co.uk or if you click on a book cover below you can find more medical information and also details of a cookery book especially for people with iron- overload
The Hemochromatosis Cookbook

I have always enjoyed cooking but I was a little bit phased when I realized that I would have to cook differently to limit my iron intake. Cheryl Garrison's book, has been a great help to me in keeping me focused on this dietry requirement. Cheryl's husband suffers from our complaint and Cheryl whom I have known for several years, has worked intensely to find tasty and interesting low iron dishes. She is rather an authority on G.H. and ran a lively forum for the Iron Institute of America

The Iron Disorders Institute Guide to Hemochromatosis

This book has been my bible and reference book for many years and I have never found another book that is so clearly written and so well structured as it deals with many problems through case studies and has a comprehensive index. This is the only book once offered for sale by the British Society. It is authoritative and well written and I would not be without a copy.

My Fee - £35 plus travelling expenses if outside the Birmingham area
