Sylvia M Everitt's Staffordshire Millennium Embroideries

Staffordshire Millennium Embroideries by Dianne Mannering
This is a book about the history of Staffordshire illustrated with, and driven by Sylvia Everitt's exquisite Staffordshire Millennium Embroideries.

The history of the county presented in my book is light, anecdotal and chatty - its more a coffee table book than a seriously informative tome about Staffordshire's history. The history is presented century by century rather than area by area and takes the reader on a journey from the eleventh century through the ages to the brink of the twentyfirst century. At the beginning of each chapter is a list of the Kings and Queens who ruled during the century and this mirrors the top and bottom borders of the embroidery panels which also, in pictorial terms, provide the same information.

This book has proved enormously successful as a gift to people visiting the county or those native to it who have moved away. The embroideries are deeply rooted in the book, each of the eleven panels has a full page plate and then each vignette is separately shown to illudstrate that particular historical point.

Although the book is driven by Sylvia Everitt's Staffordshire Millennium Embroideries, I have included other facts which I felt relevant. A highly colourful book which is of interest to historians and embroiderers alike and marries the two subjects seemlessly. Sylvia has added musings and notes about the technical aspects of crafting the eleven panels which embroiderers and the lay man will both find on interest.

By the way, if you're looking for a definitive history of Staffordshire, then I suggest Greenslade and Stuart's A History of Staffordshire.
