If your Public Speaking is a secondary career do be sure to mention the fact that you use your car for this purpose. If you fail to do so, the clause in your policy stating that you are covered for journeys ‘to and from work and in connection with your occupation’ will not cover you whilst driving to and from your Public Speaking engagements. If your policy already gives business use for your day job most insurers won’t charge extra to include your secondary career – but they MUST be advised about it.
Many Public Speakers are retired and have stated this on their motor insurance proposal form. Beware, most insurance policies will restrict a retired persons policy cover to social domestic and pleasure only. There will be no clause stating 'and in connection with the insured's business’
Make no doubt about it - even if you have given up the day job and consider yourself to be retired, if you are using your car to travel from venues where you are speaking to an audience in return for a fee - then you need your insurers to know about it and you need your policy to include the clause giving you personal business use. Your insurance premium may have attracted a small discount because you have stated yourself as a retired person, if so, you’ll lose this discount - but your insurers MUST be told so that the relevant clause can be added to your policy'.
Another thing to be aware of - your equipment will not be covered if it is damaged during an accident or stolen with or from your car - not even if you have comprehensive cover.
