Talks, Demonstrations, Workshops and After Dinner Speaker

Although only in my 50’s (just!), I have been giving talks to both male and female audiences varying in number from a dozen to over 500, with an age range of 8 to 80 plus, for over 35 years!   Following a background in theatre, music and tv/video production, I have been event producer for a company specialising in educational seminars and workshops in the UK, Europe and America for the last 14 years.

Many requests for repeat visits mean that the number of talks increase annually and I am on the approved speaker list of several WI county groups.  Talks last an average of 45 minutes although they can be amended to fit any programme – some groups have even asked for a 'double session' for special events.  Talks can also be made available to the public as fund raisers.

I am based in Wiltshire and regularly give talks in Avon, Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire. Subject to availability, I am happy to attend at short notice.

My talks

  • Funny Way To Make A Living (1) In Wales Filming for S4C and BBC Wales – the challenges of finding props, locations, even animal training for science, comedy and drama programmes.
  • Funny Way To Make A Living (2) More unusual film/tv/corporate video experiences, including auditioning tortoises, training turkeys to walk on a lead and making a pet rat a master of disguise.
  • Funny Way To Make A Living (3) Theatre Memories Behind the scenes at the Wyvern Theatre, Swindon and touring productions.  Famous faces, popular plays, and lots of “how they do its”.
  • He’s Behind You Pantomime history, customs, storylines, settings and reminiscences of working on a very English entertainment, where real life is overtaken by fantasy, and good always wins!
  • Soft-Toy Superstars - NEW for 2012 Find out the background behind old favourites such as Sooty, Rupert and the Wombles, including what it’s like to work with these soft-toy superstars!
  • A Bit Of A Carry On – NEW for 2012 Memories of Carry On films: the plots, the people and the saucy seaside-postcard type humour, together with the genre’s popularity and sad demise.
  • The Mystery Of Agatha Christie - NEW for Winter 2011 The life and books of one of the most prolific crime writers of all time, including character development, locations and her own life.
  • Peter Rabbit And Friends – NEW for Winter 2011 The world of Peter Rabbit, Squirrel Nutkin, Mrs Tiggy-winkle and their creator: author, illustrator and natural scientist Beatrix Potter.
  • Wartime Kitchen Life on the Home Front: grow your own, rationing, recycling, make do and mend.  Also features the life of the evacuees, and much more, includes a quiz and recipes.
  • A Dicken’s Of A Christmas The Victorian England of Charles Dickens, his life and times.  How Christmas was celebrated by Victorians and in his books:  pastimes, celebrations and food.
  • Treasure Chest Of Words And Sayings Origins behind everyday phrases such as chip on your shoulder, Bob’s your uncle, higgledy piggledy, bringing home the bacon, damp squib etc.
  • Titanic What really did happen to the passengers and employees on the ship they said would never sink?  Hear about the children who had been abducted and the reunited with their mother, the wealthy American widow who saved countless lives and many other real life stories.

Talks with Music

The following talks all include music. PA equipment is provided and a PPL licence held, authorising the public performance of sound recordings for use in lectures and presentations.   All of the following talks have song sheets should members wish to join in – fun, but not compulsory!

  • The Golden Age of Musical Theatres Musical theatre - from the Prairies of Oklahoma to anti-war Hair.  Personal reminiscences, story lines, cast, settings and more.
  • The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh The stories behind shows and life of one of the UK’s most successful theatre producers.
  • Disney Magic From an almost bankrupt cartoonist to multi million dollar enterprise.  My fascination in Disney has grown during 14 years of producing educational events at Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney World Florida.
  • Something to Smile About - New for 2012 The life, words and music of some great comic writers and performers including Flanders and Swan, Noel Coward, Frankie Howard and Joyce Grenfell.
  • Heroes and Sweethearts – a tribute to the music of World War II, and tales of some surprising heroes.   Features songs sung by Vera Lynn, The Andrews Sisters, Doris Day and Anne Shelton.
