About my talk...

Trading as ThompsonText, I’m a self-employed translator, also doing multilingual desktop publishing. Based in S Yorkshire, but originally from deepest Kent, I’ve worked in a number of language-based jobs, including reading foreign newspapers for business intelligence, localising database products for export markets, and as a project manager in a translation agency. It was a “how hard can it be?” conversation in that agency that sparked my exploration of the world’s writing systems. The answer was “quite tricky” by the way.

How Many Letters in the Alphabet?

Chris Thompson 1

A tour of the world in writing systems. The talk lasts for 1 hour to 1h30.

A look at the main writing systems of the world, in a grand tour starting in the UK and finishing who knows where – the final frontier? Includes a quick quiz, “Name that Language”.

I’m open to suggestions for other language/translation-related subjects. I’ve given talks on “Desktop Publishing for Translators” to the translation students at Leeds University, and “How I Learned to Love Unicode” to the Yorkshire Translators & Interpreters.
