The
Chadsmoor Tapestry Group
Creation Project
It all started when a group of people living in and around Chadsmoor , gathered together to make a tapestry to celebrate the Millennium. By the time the Millennium project was done and dusted, the group had welded themselves together into a comfortable team called the Chadsmoor Tapestry Group and they didn't feel like walking away from the comorarderie and friendship that they'd found. Thus a decision was made to cushion the pews in the Chasmoor Methodist Church which were renowned for the lack of comfort. This was a huge project, especially when it was decided that not only was seating required, but also pew backs.
The work was about eighty percent finished when
I was approached to write the book about what had become known as the Creation Project. At first I thought to turn down the project on the basis that I am not particularly religious and so I would struggle with the concept of their work. However, I was promised that I would be given a totally open remit (as had been the case with Sylvia Everitt when I wrote the book about her work The Staffordshire Millennium Embroideried). I visited the group at their Wednesday evening meetings a couple of times in an attempt to 'find a voice' with which to write the book and I found them such a lovely group of people that I decided the book would celebrate the people who had come together to create the Project as much as the Creation Project itself. Each individual who had worked on the tapestries was interviewed several times and the book was put together in their own words. There are a few copies of this book still available - only because they got stored away and forgotten! Moreover, you may be able to find one on Ebay or Amazon - if so, look out for launch copies because on that day we managed to pursuade as many of the group members as possible to sign their entry in the book, so, they're absolutely unique and in time, these launch-day books will become much sort after.
