About me...

Finding my father’s medal recently, along with some photos of him in the company of Eastern European men carrying guns, made me think again about what my Beethoven loving, stamp collecting, finch breeding, unsociable father did for a living. I have spent time researching what exactly he did to be awarded the medal.

Eavesdropping on the Soviets

During the Cold War, my father ran one of the SIGINT stations on the Turkish coast of the Black Sea listening to soviet radio chatter and monitoring missile movement. Each tour of duty lasted 4 1/2 months and took its toll on family life. When he returned we would walk for hours around our home town, Scarborough, and he would tell me anecdotes of his time away. He ‘spun’ his stories to make them funny but in reality what he did was often frightening and dangerous, a fact which was carefully kept from me, the child, at the time.
