About me...

I am an experienced vintage singer, specialising in the Great American Songbook (1925-1955) and in British and American songs of WW2. I’m also a former teacher with a keen interest in history, well accustomed to public speaking and happy to present to audiences of any age or size. I am DBS checked and have public liability insurance. My talks are accompanied by songs to illuminate the content.

About my Performances and Talks...

I offer performances; performances with short introductions to each song; and talks, which are illustrated with relevant songs and a powerpoint presentation. I present in costume with vintage mic and just need a couple of plug points for my portable sound equipment. If I am giving a talk with powerpoint presentation, I can bring my own projector or plug into one if available; I will need a white wall or screen to project on to.

Singing sentimental songs in a popular style, the Forces’ Sweethearts kept spirits up at home during the Blitz and abroad in every theatre of war. Many performed with ENSA in very difficult circumstances; many were not professional performers and went back to other jobs when the war ended; some, like Gracie Fields, Joyce Grenfell and Vera Lynn, became national treasures. This talk explores the songs, singing styles and experiences of the Forces’ Sweethearts, and includes performances (audience participation encouraged!) of such standards as We’ll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover.

A journey through the Golden Age of American Song, considering its beginnings in Tin Pan Alley, the influence of jazz and blues, the impact of radio, and its immeasurable contribution to musical theatre and film. This talk takes in the works of key composers such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin and makes reference to a host of popular figures of the time including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and Duke Ellington. With performances of key songs of the genre.
