About me...

Having taken early retirement in 2013, continued to build up a strong knowledge and interest in Military History.
Working with a friend, David Bardell, we have developed a compelling passion for the Shot At Dawn story. We have visited Belgium/France for the past 3 years to research our WW1 interest.
We’d like to share this heartbreaking story with Groups. It is the background and stories of the Event which receives our (and hopefully your) attention.

About my talk...

The talk lasts between 45 minutes and one hour and questions at the end are welcome.
We bring our own laptop, projector, screen (if required) and voice amplifier, so we require nothing except a power socket in proximity to our equipment.

Fee:

£50 per talk within ten miles of my home address in Tamworth, Staffordshire. Further afield, modest travel expenses will be required. We operate around the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Derbyshire Leicestershire and like areas.

Shot At Dawn

Public Speaker in Staffordshire, Mike Byrne presents his talk SHOT AT DAWN

Between 1914 and 1920, more than 3,000 British soldiers were sentenced to death by courts martial for desertion, cowardice, striking an officer, disobedience, falling asleep on duty or casting away arms.

However, only 346 were actually executed with 37 of these having committed capital crimes such as murder. The remaining 309 become the centrepiece of our Talk.

From our investigations, we have selected a few examples and explain how the events unfolded that lead to the Courts Marshall and the unyielding application of the law. We finish the talk by explaining how these tragic men were finally pardoned after 90 years of disgrace to their families.
