Getting Known as a Public Speaker

I have been a public speaker for about fifteen years now and I've learned how to get myself known without it costing me money in advertising - here are a few hints and tips

Naming your talk

Think very carefully about the name of your talk(s). The name is your shop front. It is the first thing the Program Secretary will know about you when she reads your leaflet or sees your information on a website - so it is important to get the right impression. Allow your title to convey as much as possible in as few words as is practical.

The program Secretaries of organisations such as Luncheon Clubs, Friendship Clubs, WI, Probus, TWG, are mostly looking for something light hearted and entertaining that makes the audience go home with a feel good factor so that they return the following week ready for another light and amusing talk. A very good, but harrowing talk about the Titanic or Spitfires in WWII for instance, needs three light hearted ones to back it up, otherwise, the club members start to feel they are taking the trouble to go out and cough up their £2 or whatever, only to be made to feel stressed and glum. Hence, humorous talks make good business sense from your point of view, so if you've got one, FLAUNT IT ..... give it a light hearted quip of a title.

Example: My Life as a Butler - not particularly impressive

What about: Butler through the Keyhole or, maybe What the Butler Saw!

If you happen to have worked anywhere interesting, or worked for someone high profile, Beefeater at the Tower or Richard Branson for instance, then do manage to get that into your title, but do try and be sassy with it.

Example: 25 years Serving the Queen as a Beefeater - a bit ponderous, don't you think?

What about: Off With Their Heads - nobody is going to take this title seriously, so they're going to guess it'll be a fun talk.

2nd Feb 2012: I am working on this section of the website and will expand my recommendations as I get the time. So, if the heading is underlined, click through for more information........
